Hawaii & Travel Bans: Resettlement at Risk

During the last Trump Administration, we watched as refugee admissions plummeted and a discriminatory travel ban devastated immigrant communities. Once again, history is repeating itself.

We’ve been here before—and we know the consequences.

Earlier this month, the Trump Administration circulated a draft list targeting citizens from as many as 43 countries in a new travel ban that dwarfs his first Administration’s travel ban. While the first-term ban was eventually upheld by the Supreme Court after multiple challenges, this new proposal expands upon the original restrictions dramatically.

The travel ban’s sweeping categorizations—the “red,” “orange,” and “yellow” lists—create arbitrary barriers that prevent people from finding safety in the U.S. based solely on their nationality. If the Trump Administration resumes refugee admissions—as court has ordered them to do—some refugees will likely be barred from entering the U.S. simply based on their country of origin.

They’ve had eight years to refine their legal strategies and regulatory plans. But we’ve also had eight years—and the lessons aren’t only for the Trump Administration. If we let it, the recent past can teach us how to approach the present, too.
